city (1990 pop. 66,462), seat of Shasta co., N central Calif., on the Sacramento River; inc. 1872. A principal tourist center for a mountain and lake region, it also has lumbering, food-processing, and diverse manufacturing. Redding is one of the fastest-growing U.S. cities. Simpson Univ. is there. Attractions include the Turtle Bay art and history museum, the Sundial Bridge, and an arboretum. Nearby are Shasta DamShasta Dam,
602 ft (183 m) high and 3,460 ft (1,055 m) long, on the Sacramento River, N Calif.; built 1938–45. One of the largest concrete dams in the world, it is a major unit in the Central Valley project.
