When students said they read "braille" it could mean paper braille or braille on a refreshable display. Unless they were asked specifically or if the context of their answer made it clear, it was nebulous when they referred to "braille" as to which format they meant.
The term "refreshable display" reflects the process of reading one line of text at a time, erasing and reading the next, as the device cannot translate a full screen of text on a single display.
