This "removedness" mirrors the disconnect between White people and their Whiteness (Solorzano & Yosso, 2001; Watson, 2012).
The poem begins with the speaker's summoning of a well-prepared witness, "remembrance of things past," to his own private court, his "sessions of sweet silent thought" (we know by his use of the demonstrative adjective that he is already familiar with these sessions, and that he expects them to be "sweet").(36) Most important, it is he himself who summons remembrance: remembrance does not summon him.(37) The ensuing weeping, moaning, and paying over of woes is not finally or simply a burden, but a "play it Sam, play 'As Time goes By'" gesture, one that testifies to the poet-lover's removedness from his own past experience.
