rotating variable

rotating variable

A star with a hotter or cooler region on its surface that periodically rotates into our line of sight and causes slight variations in the star's brightness. Many dwarf Me stars show this effect (prototype BY Draconis), probably because their strong magnetic fields cause a large proportion of the star's surface to be covered by dark ‘starspots’.
