By 1997, Syms grew from 11 to 27 stores, with sales square
footage per store increasing by more than 150%.
The loss for the quarter was the result of failing to achieve planned sales and gross margin, which were requirements for profitability with Audio King's expanded sales square
footage and increased fixed costs.
The sales area of the "Concept 97" stores is about 20,000 square feet, while the sales square
footage of the stores that are candidates for relocation is about 14,000.
