satellite navigation

Using a satellite-based system to pinpoint one's location as well as provide step-by-step directions to a destination. In the U.S., GPS satellite navigation was used by the military starting in the 1960s. In 1983, it was made public but with less precise positioning for civilian use. In 2000, the restrictions were dropped. See navigation system and GPS.
