Scarp

A steep slope constructed as a defensive measure in a fortification.

Scarp

a steep (approximately 45°) and high (approximately 3 m) section of a slope or river bank facing the enemy; it was used as an antitank or antitransport barrier in an obstacle system. Scarps were built in conjunction with fortresses and in obstacle systems that were part of fortified border lines; they were also used in World War II. Scarp faces were protected by artillery and rifle and machine-gun fire, and their approaches were mined.
