Luis reports that the great and renowned Herja mine near Baia Marie, Maramures, finally closed in December 2006, after who knows how many decades of yielding superb specimens of semseyite
, stibnite, sphalerite, bournonite, fizelyite and other sulfides common and rare, as well as fine calcite, gypsum and quartz.
In these cavities many other sulfosalts have been found: guettardite, robinsonite, zinkenite, boulangerite, semseyite
, jordanite, tetrahedrite, sulvanite, colusite, famatinite and kesterite.
Specimens Pendeville received in exchange from Ehrmann included a large Japanese stibnite from the Ichinokawa mine, approximately 25 cm tall; a kunzite from the Galileia area, Minas Gerais, Brazil; an erythrite from BouAzzer, Morocco; a semseyite
; and a large wulfenite matrix specimen from Los Lamentos, Chihuahua.
Diaphorite and fizelyite were first observed in Canada at the Van Silver mine, and it is the second reported occurrence in Canada for semseyite, miargyrite and pyrostilpnite.
Calcite then becomes the only carbonate, depositing with semseyite, freieslebenite and boulangerite.
One specimen shows fizelyite overgrowing semseyite, yet in another part of the vug semseyite occurs on fizelyite, the only evidence of their co-deposition.
At the Van Silver deposit semseyite occurs as tabular gray crystals up to 3 mm in size, often in parallel growth.
Hoda and Chang (1975) found that, in the 350[degrees] to 250[degrees]C range, miargyrite, diaphorite, fizelyite, semseyite, freieslebenite and boulangerite crystallized sequentially, and in the 250[degrees] to 180[degrees]C range pyrargyrite and pyrostilpnite precipitated.
so I made one, to help out my Herja mine suite, with its semseyite
, berthierite and black calcite pieces.

A few semseyite
crystals about 1 mm in size have been found in the Ceragiola area.
Also available from Herja were some fine specimens of semseyite
in fans of small blades to 1 cm or so, the best again on a contrasting matrix of white quartz prisms; but the more typical pieces show the mineral - itself often tarnished black - on a dark sulfide matrix.
