shell out

[Unix] To spawn an interactive subshell from within a program (e.g. a mailer or editor). "Bang foo runs foo in a subshell, while bang alone shells out."

shell out

To temporarily exit an application and go back to the operating system to perform some function. When the operation is completed, control is returned to the application.
