simulator

any device or system that simulates specific conditions or the characteristics of a real process or machine for the purposes of research or operator training

simulator

[′sim·yə‚lād·ər]
(computer science)
A routine which is executed by one computer but which imitates the operations of another computer.
(engineering)
A computer or other piece of equipment that simulates a desired system or condition and shows the effects of various applied changes, such as a flight simulator.

simulator

A term used normally for aircraft simulators. However, simulators are dynamic devices that attempt to reproduce the behavior of another dynamic device to the maximum extent but in static conditions. An aircraft simulator is an enclosed housing that duplicates the controls, feel, displays, and performance of the actual aircraft. There are also maintenance simulators to train maintenance personnel and air combat simulators to train pilots in air combat. The simplest form of simulator is a desktop. This form and those based on personal computers are becoming more common.

simulator

(1) Software that enables the execution of an application written for a different computer environment. See emulator.

(2) Software that models the interactions of business processes to determine the most advantageous marketing approach.

(3) Software that models the behavior of an electronic device or circuit. For example, a smartphone simulator operates in the computer as if it were an actual hardware device.

(4) Hardware and software that models the behavior of real-world objects. See flight simulator.

summarizes the fidelity of a V-22 Full-Flight Simulator and the benefits of training in a state-of-the-art environment: "While it is very hard to make any simulator absolutely realistic, with the high fidelity FFSs that we currently have, it is possible to generate tactical scenarios with networked devices that provide very realistic training.
If we continue with similar lifestyles, we may see more severe conditions," Takahashi says, noting that the task of accurately unraveling the relationships between local weather conditions, climate and global warming is an extremely complex task and would require a next-generation Earth Simulator.
The demonstrated simulator distributes a model over three Pentium III processors running RT-LAB under QNX--one executing the model at 50 microseconds sampling time and communicating through shared memory, with a second processor managing NI PXI-6713 analog output and NI6602 timer I/O boards in order to test the controller.
Simulator rides are set on a motion base that gyrates in up to six different directions, called degrees of freedom: heave (moving up and down), pitch (tilting forward and back), roll (tilting side-to-side), surge (moving forward and back), sway (moving side-to-side), and yaw (twisting side-to-side).
Simulators are also the military's shining hope for fast, antiseptic future conflicts--the theory being that if troops can drill on realistic machines, during actual combat it will be a smooth ride from "go" to "game over.
The simulator would allow you to define a process set-up sheet, debug any problems, and optimize cycle time and quality.
