solar chimney

[‚sō·lər ′chim·nē]
(engineering)
A natural-draft drive device that uses solar radiation to provide upward momentum to a mass of air, thereby converting the thermal energy to kinetic energy, which can be extracted from the air with suitable wind machines.

"I designed a model for a 50 kilowatt solar chimney that can pump about 370 m3 of water daily throughout the year at a depth of 200 meter," Saleh added.
For example, Chakraborty and Fonseca (2005) experimentally assessed the performance enhancement of a passive evaporative cooling tower where the induced flow was augmented by the presence of a separate solar chimney. In that instance a separate chimney was exposed directly to incident solar radiation.
About the solar power, it is divided into three types of power generation technologies, namely, PV power, solar chimney power plant (SCPP, one technology for the large-scale utilization of solar energy) [20], and CSP (the mechanism of a conventional SCPP is as follows [20]: sunlight transmits through the solar collector cover and heats the ground below; then ambient air enters the solar collector and is heated as it flows along the collector toward its centre, where a chimney is located; then the airflow enters the chimney, due to the pressure created by the density difference between the warm airflow and ambient cold air; finally, with the power conversion unit, the kinetic energy of the airflow is transferred into electrical power).
The solar chimney power plant (SCPP) consists of three essential parts: a solar collector, a chimney, and a power conversion unit.
This study adopted the general design of solar tunnel dryers from past studies [6-8] but with the incorporation of a solar chimney to make the dryer a natural convection type.
The substation's tower serves as a solar chimney to create natural ventilation.
The double-skin faade, one of the first of its kind in North America, combines with two vertical thermal shafts and a solar chimney to naturally ventilate the 33-story skyscraper without electricity or fan power for 42 percent of the year.
The first solar chimney power plant in the world was commissioned on 7 June 1982 in Manzanares--Spain, by the Minister of Research and Technology of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The most unusual feature of Manitoba Hydro's groundbreaking building is its solar chimney -- a multi-story shaft of glass projecting above the roof.
Incorporating state-of-the-art green technology, including a double-skin facade and solar chimney, the tower was designed to exceed LEED Platinum certification and to be the greenest office tower in the world.
Such technologies include rammed earth walls, which use local materials and have thermal properties that help control the home's internal temperature; the incorporation of a solar chimney which is a passive way of improving the natural ventilation by convection (air is heated at the top and sucks in cool air from below); doors and windows are also an important part since they have to be insulated to keep the heat away and avoid losing the cool air inside; harvesting rainwater to be used for daily activities; processing gray water to use for irrigation; and finally, the use of solar panels to provide clean energy.
It is a solar chimney with unprotected west-facing glass that improves the stack-effect in summer for night-flushing with operable windows at the peak.
