Normal position when spark takes place.
spark advance
Position of piston and crankshaft when spark is advanced by 15°.
The angular position of the crankshaft, relative to top dead center, at the moment of spark ignition. A 15° spark advance means that the spark is applied when the crankshaft is 15° from reaching top dead center on the compression stroke.

The controller task is to manage each cylinder spark advance to achieve a pre-defined combustion phase, while guaranteeing that a pre-fixed knocking intensity level is not largely nor frequently overcome.
