a genus of filamentary green algae of the subphy-lum Conjugatophytina. The filaments of a spirogyra consist of a single row of cells containing one or more spiral ribbons of chlo-roplasts. Reproduction is sexual and vegetative, with the filaments breaking into parts. There are approximately 200 species, distributed in stagnant and slowly flowing fresh waters. Spirogy-ras form large areas of scum on the water’s surface.
