in music, the short, abrupt execution of sounds whereby the sounds are clearly separated from one another. Staccato is the opposite of legato. It is indicated either by the term “staccato” or by dots above or below the notes. On string instruments, staccato is the execution of several notes by the abrupt movement of the bow upward or downward.
