standard screen HDTV

An earlier HDTV set that had a screen with the traditional 4:3 aspect ratio (more square). Such TVs displayed images in higher resolution but still showed the letterbox effect because they did not have the wide aspect ratio for HD programs or movies in their original format. See HDTV and EDTV.
