1. Gertrude. 1874--1946, US writer, resident in Paris (1903--1946). Her works include Three Lives (1908) and The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933)
2. Heinrich Friedrich Carl , Baron Stein. 1757--1831, Prussian statesman, who contributed greatly to the modernization of Prussia and played a major role in the European coalition against Napoleon (1813--15)

Scholarship on Gertrude Stein's work has long been a fraught endeavor, marked by the notion that one must retrace the history of Gertrude Stein as a personage in order to discuss the work in a way that is not naively unaware of her lived history.
Recently there has been a trend toward more favorable analyses of Stein as a celebrity.
Worked by Stein into a coherent composition that is essentially Modernist in spirit, they emerge like notes in a piece of music as you move from one part of the building to another.
Colour is used by Stein to create reverberations: the grey silky concrete is picked up by the silvery bark of the eucalyptus; the green of the grass is echoed in a kitchen alcove and a Newsom chair, and it is the grass that becomes unreal.
Produced in a limited edition of 9950, this year's stein sells for $44.
The stein itself stands nearly eight-inches high and is topped with an embossed pewter lid.
