Sublieutenant

 

(podporuchik). (1) A company-grade officer’s rank in the Russian Army, conferred upon graduation from a military school. The corresponding rank in the cavalry was cornet, and in the cossack units khorunzhii.

(2) In the Polish Army, podporucznik (“second lieutenant”), and in the Czechoslovak People’s Army, podporučik (“junior lieutenant”), are the first military rank of a junior officer.
