Related to supercharged: turbocharger
a device, usually a fan or compressor driven by the engine, that increases the mass of air drawn into an internal-combustion engine by raising the intake pressure
Collins Discovery Encyclopedia, 1st edition © HarperCollins Publishers 2005
An air pump or blower in the intake system of an internal combustion engine used to increase the weight of air charge and consequent power output from a given engine size.
McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific & Technical Terms, 6E, Copyright © 2003 by The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc.
An engine or exhaust-driven fan or impeller used to provide additional fuel-air mixture to the engine so that it can produce additional power. This is done by forcing more fuel-air mixture into the cylinders than could be done by a normally aspirated engine at ambient atmospheric pressure. Supercharging prevents the loss of power with an increase in altitude and helps maintain the manifold pressure. See also turbocharger.
