surface brightness

Luminosity per unit area on the sky, usually expressed for optical data as magnitudes per square arc second. It is a useful distance-independent property to use in the comparison of low-redshift galaxies (where relativistic corrections are unimportant) because the angular area subtended and the luminosity both decrease with the inverse square of the distance.
