That is the refrigerant flow entering the surge drum vessel, then through the vertical subcooling pipe B, evaporator heat exchanger, and then back to the surge drum vessel.
In the case of the flooded evaporator, the inlet dryness fraction is 0 and there is no requirement of superheat control at the exit point as a two-phase flow separation surge drum vessel is fitted downstream of the evaporator.
In the liquid overfeed flooded refrigeration cycles, virtually saturated refrigerant vapor leaves the surge drum.
The liquid overfeed flooded circuit is fitted with a gravity surge drum vessel to provide overfeed liquid to the evaporator and also to separate the returned two-phase flow mixture from the evaporator to enable dry gas return to the compressor.
5 (which is Equation (1) in this paper) is appropriate for sizing the pres sure relief devices for the surge drum.
The plant has low and high temperature surge drums, 20 evaporators and two ambient heaters.
