A flight to make controlled observations of the operation or performance of an aircraft or a rocket, or of a component of an aircraft or rocket.

test flight

The flight of an aircraft performed to achieve a specified test objective. In the normal course, test flights are carried out to ascertain the air-worthiness of aircraft or individual systems as well as to confirm performance parameters.
