A technique for detecting explosives, in which the object under inspection is conveyed through a cloud of thermal neutrons (generated by slowing down fast neutrons in multiple collisions in a moderator surrounding the source), and the characteristic high-energy gamma rays that are then emitted by the objects are used in analysis and imaging.
