The generic term for electronic navigation systems in which position is derived by calculations based on the bearing from two or more emitters located at different but accurately known positions.

There are five ways to define that location: using a radial and distance from a known waypoint (or theta-rho); two radials from two known waypoints (theta-theta); a set of latitude and longitude coordinates; a position on the moving map; or the aircraft's current position.
