1. a person who permanently acts the part of and completely identifies with the opposite sex
2. a person who has undergone medical and surgical procedures to alter external sexual characteristics to those of the opposite sex

a person who experiences a profound and constant dislocation between his or her physiological sex and his or her ascribed GENDER. Sometimes there is a desire to change physiological sex so that this comes into line with subjective feelings of gender identity The term ‘transsexual’ was introduced in 1953.
