The turret is an essential part of turret lathes and is used on many automatic and semiautomatic machines, vertical lathes, and drill presses. It usually has an indexing mechanism for precise setting during rotation, that is, for positioning each tool in the working position. It may be rotated and locked in position automatically, manually, or by command from a program carrier in program-controlled machines. As the turret rotates, the speed and feed rate can be changed simultaneously to match the tool being used.
