At impact sites that puncture mare plains, these craters display upwarped
exposures of the previously flat-lying lava flows on their inner walls, capped by fallback ejecta.
Beard (1999) has also shown lakes developed in valley floors ~100 km inland when river courses became partially obstructed by upwarped
or uplifted cratonic blocks to their immediate west, e.g.
Rutherford County is located in the Central Basin physiographic province, which is underlain by limestones of Ordovician age that have been gently upwarped
to form the Nashville Dome (Wilson, 1940; Wilson, 1948).
