By retaining a commissioning firm and personnel with extensive familiarity with the specialized type of building (the processes unique to vivarium occupancy as well as the conventional HVAC equipment), and this building specifically (including some of the users and operating staff), the project set itself up for success.

Many educational institutions and research facilities don't advertise the fact that they have a vivarium. There are two air-handling units (25,000 cfm [11 798 L/s] each) for the office and general building areas; two air-handling units (135,000 cfm [63 706 L/s] each) for the laboratory and laboratory support spaces; and four air-handling units (25,000 cfm [11 798 L/s] each) to serve the vivarium space.
The laboratory/laboratory support and vivarium air-handling units are 100% outside air design with glycol runaround energy recovery coils in the air-handling units and in the respective exhaust streams for these systems.
