Whitings are found along the European coast of the Atlantic Ocean; a special subspecies inhabits the Black Sea. The fish live in coastal waters and make no significant migrations. Whitings reach sexual maturity in the first or second year. Spawning is intermittent, with most of the eggs being deposited from December through March. The roe are deposited in deep waters, but the fry live in upper zones of the waters. The fry feed on plankton, and the adults on small fishes.
