Zeta

Duklja, Diocleia, a historical region on the eastern shores of the Adriatic Sea.

From the seventh century, Zeta was inhabited by the Serbian Dukljani tribe, which in the ninth century founded the principality of Duklja; this was conquered by Byzantium to-ward the end of the century. The name “Zeta,” so called after a tributary of the Morača River, was first used in the llth century.

Zeta became independent in 1042. In the late 11th and early 12th century the region comprised part of Raška and Bosnia, Trebinje, and Hum. In the 1180’s, Zeta became part of the Serbian state of the Nemanjići. After the death of Stefan Dušan in 1355, the region became independent once more under the rule of the Balšići županj (mid-14th century to 1421) and then the Crnojevići (1430–99). Increasing Turkish pressure forced Stefan Crnojević (županj, 1426–65) to recognize Venetian hegemony in 1444. The Turks conquered Zeta in the late 15th century. Zeta eventually came to be called Montenegro.
