The new 16,000 square foot manufacturing center houses state-of-the-art tooling, designed specifically for manufacturing turbine and
axial compressor airfoils.
HP Turbine Rotor--The high-pressure turbine, directly coupled to the
axial compressor, is a two-stage reaction type designed to achieve very high expansion efficiency.
This includes losses from site elevation, all extractions for auxiliaries, inlet/exhaust ducting losses and
axial compressor fouling.
About the same time as Rateau was working, Charles Parsons investigated
axial compressors for gas turbine applications, but results showed that this compressor was poor in terms of efficiency and stability.
Using a proper casing treatment, an
axial compressor can provide an increased stall-margin, with only small penalties of the efficiency.
There was another difference: Griffith used an
axial compressor rather than the centrifugal one Whittle proposed.
Low net work ratio engines where a higher portion of the total turbine work is consumed in the compressor tend to be both more susceptible and sensitive to
axial compressor fouling.
It is possible to affect the characteristics of the
axial compressor by formation of artificial roughness on the blade surface in the bladed disks.
This rotor may be formally divided into two zones of gas turbine and
axial compressor. Rigidity of the rotors elements is the same in different directions.
