CDDB

CDDB

(CD DataBase) The first online music database used to identify music CDs in order to obtain the missing album and track information. Developed by Ti Kan and Steve Scherf, it was originally a community driven service, but became a commercial product when CDDB, Inc. was founded in 1995. The company was renamed Gracenote three years later and then acquired by Sony in 2008. The first version of CDDB (CDDB1) was turned over to the freedb community and is compatible with freedb client software. Subsequent versions of CDDB are not compatible, however, and underwent a name change to Gracenote Media Database (see freedb). See Gracenote MusicID, music CD identification and music search.

Originally following the model of CDDB, which was designed to handle pop/rock music in a now-typical artist/release/title structure, MusicBrainz has developed various iterations for handling classical music, though for the time being still shoehorns classical music into that structure.

It also has a broadband connection for accessing song names from the CDDB archive or playing internet radio.
Shiraz: AZUR THING
Initially called CDDB, but now renamed Gracenote, this database is the source of the track listings that appear when you insert a CD into your computer.
