Douala

(also Duala), a city in West Cameroon and an important industrial, trading, political, and cultural center. Population, 250,000 (1969, including the suburbs).

Douala is the country’s principal seaport (with a cargo turnover of 1.7 million tons in 1969) and a transportation junction. It has a major airport. The city is located on the left bank of the Wouri River, 21 km from where the river flows into the Gulf of Guinea; a bridge connects the city with the port of Bonaberi on the right bank of the river. Exports include wood products, cacao, coffee, palm kernels and oil, cotton and aluminum. Part of the freight traffic of neighboring African countries, including the Central African Republic and the Republic of Chad, passes through Douala. The city has a shipyard and woodworking, food-processing, textile, and footwear enterprises. There is also a bicycle-assembly plant and a glass factory, and farm implements are produced.
