Edison base

A family of screw mounts that are commonly used for light bulbs worldwide. The bulb screws into a threaded base, and sizes range from 5mm to 40mm (E5 to E40). The North American Edison base is one inch in diameter, or 26mm (E26). See incandescent bulb, halogen bulb, fluorescent bulb, LED lighting and PoE lighting.

North American Bulbs

The North American "Medium" E26 base is used for bulbs up to 300 watts. Countries with 220-240 volt power use E27 bulbs and sockets.

California's Title 24 divides lighting fixtures into high efficacy (an efficient source in a hard-wired or GU-24 base fixture) and low efficacy fixtures (Edison base fixtures and track lighting), and then puts limits on where and how much wattage for low efficacy fixtures can be used.

In practice, the selection of GU-24 base fixtures is much more limited than Edison base fixtures; they often cost 10 to 30 percent more and getting different bulbs is still not easy.

Prescriptive code problems

For incandescent housing, each downlight comes with a separate Edison base adapter that fits into the current housing's socket (A GU24 adaptor can also be ordered separately).
