(also Jailolo), an island of the Moluccas, in Indonesia. It has an area of 18,000 sq km. Halmahera has a complex configuration, with four peninsulas extending outward from the central region. The island is mountainous and reaches an elevation of 1,635 m at the active volcano Gamkonoro. The climate is equatorial. The temperature in the coastal regions is 25°–28°C throughout the year, and the annual precipitation totals 2,000–3,000 mm. Evergreen forests are found on the island. Agriculture is tropical in nature; coconuts are an important product. Spices and precious woods, such as ebony, are shipped from the island. The port of Jailolo is located on Halmahera.

Twenty years later, the Alfuros of Gilolo were revisited in 1876-77 by Achille Raffray, who was leading a French scientific expedition to explore the northwestern coast of New Guinea.
