hidden file

A disk file that does not appear in a directory listing and cannot be displayed, changed, or deleted.

hidden file

A file classification that makes a file invisible to the casual user. Hidden files are usually operating system components; however, commands issued on the command line and utility programs let users hide files to prevent unauthorized access.
