LPWA

(Low Power Wide Area) An umbrella term for battery-backed, low-speed sensors that operate without human intervention for several years. Designed for the Internet of Things (IoT), unlicensed solutions include France-based Sigfox and LoRaWAN (Long Range WAN) from the LoRa Alliance. See LoRa.

Licensed Cellular Bands
In the licensed bands, Extended Coverage GSM (EC-GSM) uses existing GSM networks. In contrast, LTE-M and NB-IoT (NarrowBand-IoT) are "clean slate" cellular IoT technologies that are not backward compatible with the installed LTE infrastructure. See LTE for IoT and NB-IoT.
