Laredo

 

a city in the southern USA, in Texas, on the left bank of the Rio Grande, on the Mexican border. Population, 69,000 (1970). A railroad junction and important transportation point on routes between the USA and Mexico.

Laredo is the commercial center of a region of irrigated farming that grows onions, other vegetables, and grapefruit. There are vegetable-oil plants and a petroleum refinery in the city. Laredo has an antimony smelter and clothing and leather-goods industries. There are deposits of oil and natural gas in the region. Laredo was founded in 1755.
