In the automated counting system, rotifers in petri dishes were imaged with a Wild M3C microscope (Leica, Heerbrugg, Switzerland) and a black and white video camera (Cohu model 4915, San Diego, California, USA), and the image was digitized by a Perceptics PixelBuffer frame grabber in a Macintosh microcomputer.
