MPEG-2 TS

(MPEG-2 Transport Stream) A container format for broadcasting MPEG-2 video via terrestrial and satellite networks. The North American digital TV standard (ATSC) uses MPEG-2 TS, which provides a more robust system for transmission than MPEG content pressed onto optical media. Apple's HTTL Live Streaming (HLS) employs this format and breaks up the file into thousands of smaller ones for multiple bit rate streaming. See ATSC, streaming protocols and fragmented MP4.

MPEG-2 TS is designed for transporting TV programs in environments affected by relatively high error rates (bit error rate (BER) higher than [10.sup.-4]).

It multiplexes transport packets from input streams and outputs a valid MPEG-2 TS, in real-time.
The ATSC Link-Layer Protocol also optimizes the proportion of useful data in the ATSC 3.0 Physical Layer, by means of efficient encapsulation and overhead reduction mechanisms for IP and MPEG-2 TS transport.
