Location:20 miles south of Saint Louis, off I-55 Exit 186 in Jefferson County.
Facilities:Museum, picnic sites, picnic shelter, special use campground, hiking trails.
Activities:Hiking, picnicking, interpretive programs, tours.
Special Features:Site contains the Kimmswick Bone Bed, an important archeological and paleontological site where the bones of mastodons and other now-extinct animals were first found in the 1800s. In 1979 scientists excavated a stone spear point made by hunters of the Clovis culture (14,000-10,000 years ago), providing the first solid evidence of the coexistence of people and mastodons. A museum at the site displays ancient artifacts, fossils, and a full-size replica of a mastodon skeleton.
