This type of failure occurred in 96 percent of the
rabbet 1,
rabbet 2, and butt joints.
One advantage to using
rabbet joints instead of butt joints when assembling a tray like this is that the former provides about 30 percent greater joining strength because there's more surface area for the glue to adhere to when the floor and sides are glued and screwed together.
At the corners of these boxes, the ends fit into
rabbets cut into the sides.
A
rabbet is simply a square notch at the edge of plywood or lumber.
I then turned the wider frame on its side to achieve the necessary depth, and the narrower frame sits snugly within the
rabbet. The matching burl-finish wraps from the face frame around to the wall while appearing to be one continuous piece of moulding.
I cut shiplap joints (an overlapping
rabbet joint used in boat-building) on the plank edges that abut other planks--not because I was concerned about the seaworthiness of my firewood box, but because it would conceal gaps between the uneven edges of the boards.
Cut door strips apart to make 12 doors,then cut a shallow
rabbet in one back edge of each for the hings, as pictured on page 100.
It's common practice to cut a
rabbet (a notch to receive the 1/4-in, back panel) on the back edge of cabinet carcasses so the back panel will be recessed.

For the hardboard base, cut a 1/8- by 3/8-inch
rabbet in one edge of the side board.
