Rendzina

One of an intrazonal, calcimorphic group of soils characterized by a brown to black, friable surface horizon and a light-gray or yellow, soft underlying horizon; found under grasses or forests in humid to semiarid climates.

The findspots of Astangu, Kajamaa and Karasi axes are all topographically different: flat seashore in a klint bay, a waterlogged slope of a rendzina hillock, and a sandy plain.

These conditions lead to formation of chernozem-like soils and calcareous chernozem-like rendzinas, characterised by the high levels of soil humus (6-20%; DRAGAN, 2004).

Its geological history belongs to Mesozoic era and the main soil type is Lithosol and Rendzina. The Rendzina type soil (dark, grayish-brown, humus-rich, shallow soil over limestone that has calcareous topsoil) supports a semi-deciduous tropical rain forest characterized by the presence of Cecropia peltata L., C.
The dominant soil types are purple, rendzina and yellow alluvial soil.
Beech trees prefer karst, with the soil types rendzina and cambisol, which is mostly found on the Swabian Alb, where most NE cases occurred.
