During this work, we also uncovered both published and unpublished breeding records in BC and SEAK in 1858-1910 for Ancient Murrelet, Cassin's Auklet, Rhinoceros Auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata), and
Tufted Puffin (Fratercula cirrhata), which we summarize (see Table 1) and discuss below.
Atlantic puffins, rhinoceros auklets and
tufted puffins typically nest in burrows on turfcovered clifftops and sea slopes.
Tufted puffins comprised 87% of this total, or 40-100% of the Pribilof Islands' population, making it highly likely that affected birds originated from colonies throughout the Bering Sea.
We found that the abundance of
tufted puffins on cliffs depended on the amount of soil accumulation.
During necropsies and routine fecal examinations of
tufted puffins at Sea World of Florida, some of the animals were found to be passing unsporulated coccidian oocysts.
A cruise around the seabird rookery, Gull Island, is a bird-lover's dream as large numbers of
tufted puffins, horned puffins, pigeon guillemots, black-legged kittiwakes, glaucous-winged gulls and common murres flit on and off its cliffs.
Oceangoing birds -
tufted puffins and common murres, for example - that produce few offspring and are highly dependent for feeding on ocean conditions, also face moderate to high risks, according to the report.
Featured posts so far include
tufted puffins, mountain goats and common murre.
Best bets: Like the swallows that return to Capistrano, colorful
tufted puffins return to Cannon Beach's Haystack Rock each April to lay eggs and raise their chicks.
Best bets: Common murres,
tufted puffins, pigeon guillemots and Brandt's, pelagic and double-crested cormorants can be seen nesting on many coastal rocks and islands.
The refuge now provides sanctuary for Oregon's largest breeding colonies of
Tufted Puffins and Common Murre.
Best bets: A colony of 200 to 300
tufted puffins journeys to Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach every summer to breed and hatch their chicks.
