VLSI

(1) (Very Large Scale Integration) An earlier measurement of transistor density on a chip. VLSI was between 100,000 and one million transistors. See SSI, MSI, LSI and ULSI.

(2) (VLSI Technology, Inc., Tempe, AZ, www.semiconductors.philips.com) A designer and manufacturer of custom chips that was acquired by Philips Semiconductors, a division of Royal Philips Electronics, in 1999. In 2006, the company was renamed NXP Semiconductors.
