A dye-containing liquid used for detecting cracks or other surface defects in nonmagnetic materials.

Some of the more common methods include dye penetrant, magnetic particle, ultrasonic and radiographic.
These include looking for the first bubble as the sample solidifies, measuring the specific gravity of the solidified sample, visual examination, use of dye penetrants, etc.
Atkinson also talked of using dye penetrant on a sectioned sample in order to show gas porosity much better than simply observing the piece.
The failed riser will usually appear solid at the interface of the casting surface and the riser neck, although shrinkage indications can often be found at this location by magnetic particle or dye penetrant testing.
