When carrying out magnetic inspection cracks are best seen when cracking is in line with current flow and at right angle to the magnetic field.
A nondestructive testing (NDT) technique that serves as a basis for most other nondestructive techniques for ascertaining imperfections and cracks in magnetic metal parts by determining any variations in the magnetic field. The technique determines the presence of variations in the magnetic flux in ferromagnetic materials of a constant cross section caused by defects, variations in hardness, discontinuities, or other irregularities. Also known as magnetic analysis inspection.
