Beginning with a punched card and soon followed by the first magnetic tape drive, the IBM 726 in 1952, and the first disk drive, the IBM Ramac 350 in 1956, the storage industry and its hierarchy was born.
In a few years, everything written to magnetic tape drives from any vendor was compressed and the end-user didn't have to worry about deciding what data to compress because it was all compressed.
Tape is (1) a more mature and stable technology (the first magnetic tape drives were introduced in the early 1950s); and (2) it is slower due to the serial nature of the search and retrieval.
