networked device protocol

The term may refer to TCP/IP, the most widely used network protocol; however, because TCP/IP is so universal, the term usually refers to a particular application that uses TCP/IP. For example, the UPnP protocol runs over IP and is used to stream media across the network (see UPnP). See networked device and TCP/IP.
