The poise is equal to the viscosity of a fluid offering a resistance of 1 dyne to the mutual displacement of two layers of fluid having an area of 1 cm² separated by a distance of 1 cm and moving with a relative velocity of 1 cm/sec. The poise was named in honor of J. L. M. Poiseuille; its abbreviation in international usage is P. 1 P = 0.1 newton-sec/m².
