Any material (or any combination of materials) used as a roof covering, such as corrugated metal, sheet metal, shingles, slate, thatch, or tile; usually provides waterproofing, wind-proofing, and thermal insulation.

Roofing

 

(of buildings and structures), the upper enclosing structure (envelope) of a roof or the covering of a building; it is directly exposed to atmospheric influences. It consists of a waterproof layer and base (lathwork, continuous planking, and intermediate layer) laid out over supporting structures or insulation (in combined coverings). Roofing is distinguished according to the type of materials used. It must be lightweight, long-lasting, and economical to build and maintain, and it must meet fire-safety requirements.
